Canada’s Largest Icebreaker Reaches North Pole, Heads to Beaufort Sea for Joint Ocean Ice Study

On Aug 16, 2026 the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Louis S. St‑Laurent reached the North Pole, collecting high‑resolution geoscience and hydrographic data to support its continental shelf claim under UNCLOS. It will then travel to the Beaufort Sea to aid the Joint Ocean Ice Study before concluding Canada’s Arctic season in late November.
