Arctic Currents Accelerate Phytoplankton Sinking, Enhancing Carbon Sequestration

Stanford researchers led by Kevin Arrigo found that water‑current convergence in the Chukchi Sea can drive phytoplankton from under the ice to the seafloor at four times the usual speed—about two metres per day compared with half a metre per day. The blooms under thick ice can be up to ten times denser than those in open water, potentially boosting carbon burial and altering bottom‑feeding food webs.
