Short-tailed Shearwater–– a tube-nosed seabird that connects Australia and the Bering Sea

Short‑tailed shearwaters migrate annually from southern Australia to the Bering/Chukchi Seas, historically bringing over half a million birds per day to Gambell in late August/September. Since the 2019 mass‑mortality event linked to warming waters and dwindling krill, daily counts have fallen to below 100 000 but tens of thousands still pass each day. The 2019 die‑off, the largest recorded, was primarily due to starvation amid reduced sea ice and altered food‑web dynamics.

Arctic Currents Accelerate Phytoplankton Sinking, Enhancing Carbon Sequestration

Stanford researchers led by Kevin Arrigo found that water‑current convergence in the Chukchi Sea can drive phytoplankton from under the ice to the seafloor at four times the usual speed—about two metres per day compared with half a metre per day. The blooms under thick ice can be up to ten times denser than those in open water, potentially boosting carbon burial and altering bottom‑feeding food webs.

Quantifying future Arctic and Antarctic climate change from a storyline perspective using ...

The preprint uses variable‑resolution climate models calibrated with CMIP6 Arctic and Antarctic storylines to show that storyline‑based lower‑boundary forcing influences future climate responses more strongly than horizontal resolution, with Arctic low‑level temperature and humidity dominated by the storyline and Antarctic precipitation and wind better captured under the storyline scenario.
