Meet Justin Bernstein, the 17-year-old Connecticut student who engineered bacteria to ...

A 17‑year‑old student from Connecticut engineered Cryobacterium bacteria to produce reflective silica, a method that could raise Arctic glacier albedo and slow melt. His project earned a $50,000 Davidson Fellowship scholarship, and climate‑modeling suggests the intervention could shift net ice loss to a gain, though it remains at the research stage.

Western Alaska’s recovery from Typhoon Halong stays uncertain a year after the storm

One year after Typhoon Halong struck Western Alaska, recovery remains uncertain. About 1,600 residents were displaced, and roughly 200 households still receive federal temporary housing. FEMA has spent more than $100 million on aid for ~2,500 people. A state request for permanent housing was denied, and a 90‑10 cost‑share request was likewise rejected, leaving FEMA to shoulder 75 % of disaster relief costs while the state covers the remaining 25 %. Alaska has begun an appeal.

AI Elders Concept Introduced at 2026 Arctic Circle Assembly

During the 2026 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík, an American investor and partner presented the “AI Elders” idea – a digital wisdom vault that would record Indigenous knowledge with consent, modeled after the Svalbard Seed Vault. NASA Snow4Flow mission adds Cornell professor to Arctic glacier study

Riley Culberg, an assistant professor of earth and atmospheric sciences at Cornell, has joined a NASA‑led Snow4Flow airborne campaign. The five‑year mission, led by the University of Arizona, will survey glaciers in Alaska, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Svalbard and southeastern Greenland from spring 2027 to 2029. Using high‑frequency radar that images the top 10‑15 m of ice, a laser altimeter, drones and ground snow‑core measurements, the team will measure snow accumulation, ice thickness and glacier elevation to improve sea‑level rise projections.

Antarctic inter-unit agreement and Arctic redeployment

A preprint reports that a Tiny Aerosol Monitor/Tiny Aerosol Conditioner unit, after operating in Antarctica, was redeployed to the Arctic, where it maintained high inter‑unit correlations and reduced internal humidity, demonstrating reliable performance across extreme marine environments, though absolute accuracy remains unverified.
