Late Holocene reexpansion of Laurentide Ice Sheet traced to Baffin Island

A new study in Science models the Late Holocene reexpansion of the Laurentide Ice Sheet as likely originating over Baffin Island in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The work complements earlier findings that Arctic ice grew for centuries before progressively retreating in the mid‑20th century.

Human activity erodes climate-driven Arctic greening

A study published on 5 August 2026 by Sun Yat‑sen University and collaborators analyzed 21 402 km² of Arctic human‑footprint areas at 30‑m resolution. It shows climate‑driven greening alongside human‑driven browning, with disturbance accounting for 16.1 % of greenness variability and causing an average browning of −109.7×10⁻⁴ NDVI per year versus stable areas greening at 37.8×10⁻⁴ NDVI per year. The results underscore that Arctic vegetation change cannot be described by uniform greening alone.

T-phase detection within spectrograms of hydroacoustic data from the Arctic Ocean

An automated ROI algorithm was applied to hydroacoustic data from the CAATEX experiment along the Nansen Basin in the central Arctic, correctly identifying 82 of 96 manually labeled T‑phase events and characterizing their spectral energy between 3 and 50 Hz, peaking at 20 Hz, with false detections mainly due to flow noise.
