Patricia Geli Discusses Sovereign AI and Iceland’s Role at the 2026 Arctic Circle Assembly

During the 2026 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, 2,500 delegates from 70+ nations convened on Arctic geopolitics, security and climate. In a closed‑door session with President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Geli highlighted Iceland’s geothermal power, subsea cables and data‑center capacity as a foundation for sovereign AI. Grímsson said Iceland can serve as a mid‑Atlantic hub only if it retains control over its infrastructure. The discussion emphasized that the Arctic’s future may be defined by who governs its compute rather than only by resource extraction.
