Thawing Permafrost in Alaska’s Brooks Range Exposes Sulfide Minerals, Causing Acidic, Metal‑laden Streams and Methane Release

Researchers find that permafrost thaw in the Brooks Range has exposed sulfide‑rich bedrock. Oxidation of iron sulfides releases sulfuric acid, elevating zinc, sulphate and other heavy‑metal concentrations in streams, while thawed organic matter emits methane, increasing greenhouse‑gas fluxes. Long‑term monitoring documents a sharp rise in these contaminants after an unusually warm winter in 2019.
