Voyage to the end of the world: floating lab to explore life in Arctic adrift in ice

A French‑built Tara polar station leaves Kirkenes, Norway in August on an eight‑month drift across the central Arctic Ocean. The 26‑m vessel is crewed by six scientists and six sailors and designed to freeze into pack ice, overwintering during the polar night while gathering data on rapid warming, pollution impacts and ecosystem changes before irreversible shifts.
