Trump’s Greenland deal confirms expanded U.S. basing rights while maintaining Danish sovereignty

On Sept. 22 2026 President Trump signed a trilateral security pact with Denmark and Greenland that reiterates the 1951 defence agreement and expands U.S. rights. The deal allows modernization of Pituffik Space Base, creation of new defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and bars non‑NATO military installations, but it does not alter Greenland’s Danish status or grant permanent U.S. control.
