Tara Polar Station departs Lorient for a year‑long Arctic drift to study sea ice and microbial responses

The Tara Polar Station, a floating laboratory, left France’s port of Lorient on July 19 and will drift across the Greenland Sea, Barents Sea and Northern Polar Basin for one year. It will collect continuous measurements of sea‑ice thickness, temperature, salinity and, uniquely, data on how rising temperatures affect Arctic microbial communities.
