Polar vortex remains strong this fall, but models project mid‑winter weakening as El Niño deepens

NASA data shows the Arctic polar vortex was stronger than average in mid‑September, while a very strong El Niño is developing in the tropical Pacific. Long‑range forecasts from the European Centre for Medium‑Range Weather Forecasts and NOAA suggest the vortex could weaken in January and February, potentially allowing colder air to move south into the United States.
