More than 400 truckloads of sand help extinguish Rankin Inlet dump fire after 10-day battle

A ten‑day blaze at Rankin Inlet’s landfill was brought under control by 14 firefighters and hamlet crews after more than 400 dump‑truck loads of sand were spread across nearly the entire site. Agnico Eagle Mines supplied a continuous ocean‑water line through ~1 km of pipe to keep fires from reigniting. The 50–70‑ft‑deep landfill may still smoulder underground, producing occasional smoke for weeks.
