In a warming Arctic, Inuit bear guards protect communities

In Nunatsiavut’s northern Labrador, the BearSafe Planning program—founded by Inuit elder Derrick Pottle in 2005—provides a three‑day course that trains residents to guard against polar and black bears. The program was created after the 2005 Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and Torngat Mountains National Park, with input from Parks Canada, Inuit elders and conservationists, and has become vital as climate change keeps more bears on land longer.
