Human‑induced climate change makes extreme fire weather in Canada’s Northwest Territories 16× more likely

World Weather Attribution’s latest study shows human‐driven warming has increased the likelihood of extreme wildfire weather in the Northwest Territories by 16 times, turning an event that would have happened once every 40 years into one that now occurs every two to six years. The surge— with 94 % of the summer’s burned area spread over a five‑week period from late June to July— has forced evacuations of largely Indigenous communities such as Wrigley and Fort Simpson, while 216 active fires were reported on August 5 amid federal staff cuts.
