Heat‑trapping gas once frozen in Arctic ground is slowly leaking and warming the planet

Methane bubbles are surfacing from thawing permafrost near Fairbanks, Alaska, marking a tipping point as the Arctic releases three times as much carbon as is currently in the atmosphere. Researchers say the added emissions could raise global temperatures by roughly 0.5 °C by the end of the century.
