Giant whales move into Greenland waters as ice disappears

Sea‑ice retreat along East Greenland’s coast has opened the region to large whales for the first time, with satellite tracking and ship surveys revealing 150 humpback sightings by 2024 and an estimated 800 000 tonnes of fish consumed. The shift marks a major ecological regime change driven by warming waters, benefiting some baleen species while threatening narwhals and belugas.
