For Decades, the Arctic Melt Season Kept Growing. Then It Stopped

Satellite data from 1979‑2023 show the Arctic melt season lengthened steadily until about 2010, after which it plateaued and began to fluctuate more from year to year. NASA and other researchers link the halt to rising cloud cover that blocks solar radiation and to the loss of thick multi‑year ice, which is being replaced by thinner, younger ice that is more sensitive to short‑term weather. The plateau does not reverse global warming; it may be temporary as remaining multi‑year ice continues to thin.
