Final Journey: Carlisle begins its ninth repatriation of students who never made it home

The Office of Army Cemeteries will disinter and repatriate 12 remains from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School from Sept. 1–Oct. 12 2026. Four Alaskan Native students—Lucy Spaulding, Mabel Stack, Edward Angalook, Tummassak—will be returned to southeastern Alaska, while three students from the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribe will be reburied in eastern Montana. Forensic experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the disinterments, and the Army will reimburse families for travel and reburial costs.
