EventDelegates at the Dene National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to help Dene citizens experiencing homelessness. It directs the Dene Nation to coordinate with First Nations, Housing NWT, and federal agencies to locate unhoused individuals and support their return to home communities with transportation, reconnection and housing. The resolution also requests meetings with Yellowknife and territorial leaders to develop a supported pathway home; Chief Toni Heron called for expanding the scope to all communities of Denendeh.
The Dene National Assembly passed a resolution directing the Dene Nation to work with First Nations, Housing NWT and federal agencies to locate unhoused Dene citizens and provide transportation, reconnection and housing assistance for those wishing to return to their communities, and to engage municipal and territorial leaders in developing a supported, culturally safe pathway home.
Dene leaders at the National Assembly urged the NWT government to step out of housing provision, and called for the Dene Nation to take over medical travel, including executive support for elders and cancer patients, along with direct funding to Indigenous governments.
