Dene Nation and Treaty 8 First Nations sign pact to defend Mackenzie River basin waters

On July 30 the Dene Nation and the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly monitor and protect waters that flow from the oil sands through the Mackenzie River basin to the Arctic coast. The agreement commits Indigenous‑led monitoring, demands independent assessments of tailings ponds, seeks reform of Alberta’s Mine Financial Security Program, and calls for full decision‑making status in a modernized Transboundary Waters Master Agreement.
