Coast Guard to base new icebreakers in Kodiak and Seward, prompting $300M infrastructure and new housing

The U.S. Coast Guard will homeport two Arctic Security Cutters in Kodiak in 2028 and a third in Seward in the early 2030s, part of an 11‑ship flotilla funded by a $25 billion package. The move will trigger construction of 20 three‑bedroom and 10 four‑bedroom homes, a child development center and new piers, and is expected to bring about 1,000 Coast Guard personnel and families, boosting local shipbuilding and economic activity. The capital city of Juneau remains a pending homeport due to a $300 million infrastructure gap.
