Bering Sea Heat Wave (2016‑20) Drives Post‑Juvenile Chinook Mortality in Yukon River

A NOAA Fisheries and University of Alaska Fairbanks study links the 2016‑2020 Bering Sea marine heat wave to a dramatic rise in post‑juvenile Chinook salmon deaths, before they could return to spawn, causing Yukon River runs to hit record lows in 2022. The decline was driven by poor juvenile recruitment and elevated marine mortality, not harvest or bycatch.
