As Canada pivots to Arctic, experts wonder if Ottawa has enough regional diplomats

Canada closed its Canadian International Arctic Centre in 2023 after citing high Oslo costs (≈$550k annually) and opened its first consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, in February 2026. The new mission, intended for three staffers, operates with one and is projected to cost $8.76 million over five years (~$1.75 million annually). Experts say Ottawa lacks enough diplomats to support its expanded Arctic policy and indigenous engagement.
