Arctic permafrost thaw drains acidic, metal‑rich waters into Alaska rivers

A 2024 study shows Arctic permafrost thaw in Alaska’s Brooks Range is releasing acidic water bearing iron, zinc, manganese and other metals—up to 70 × greater than normal—into rivers, with streams as acidic as mine drainage. The event followed a record summer and heavy snowpack, and similar leaks are now documented in more than 200 rivers across North America’s permafrost zone.
