Arctic experiment validates high‑frequency radar for extended detection

Between Sept. 7‑14, a joint North American experiment concluded a three‑year series that tested a HAARP HF transmitter paired with a low‑cost Cold Bay receiver array. Cooperative aircraft – an E‑3 Sentry, HC‑130J Combat King II and KC‑135 Stratotanker – provided known positions, and the system achieved full skywave (beyond line‑of‑sight) detections. The exercise involved Alaskan Command, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Defense Research and Development Canada and MITRE.
