Arctic 2026 Sea Ice Reaches Minimum Extent on September 12

NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center report that Arctic sea ice likely reached its yearly minimum extent of 4.60 million km² (1.78 million square miles) on September 12, 2026. The extent is tied for the tenth‑lowest value in the satellite record, matching 2008, 2010 and 2025.
