Alaska Geophysical Institute Turns 80, Rooted in WWII Science and Home to International Arctic Research Center

The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute, founded by President Harry Truman’s 1946 H.R. 6496 during World War II for federal geophysical research, celebrated its 80th anniversary on July 31 2026. It now hosts the International Arctic Research Center in the Akasofu Building and remains a global leader in Arctic science.
