Africa should prepare for a new Arctic shipping era

Climate‑driven ice melt is making the Northern Sea Route (NSR) a markedly shorter, cheaper link between Asia and Europe, drawing volume off the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope. The NSR is roughly 40 % shorter, sidesteps chokepoints, and exposes ships to higher insurance costs and dependence on Russia’s ice‑breaker fleet. While the shift threatens to bypass African ports, some states can leverage it to grow logistics and port infrastructure, though the long‑term economic impact is still uncertain.
