2026 Surge on Russia’s Northern Sea Route Highlights Limited Commercial Traction

Lloyd’s List Intelligence data show 133 ships navigated the Northern Sea Route in September 2026, a four‑fold increase versus the same period in 2022. This 2026 season, extending from August to October, saw for the first time a regular line by Chinese carrier Sea‑Legend and a trial voyage by a South Korean container ship. A Le Monde column notes the route remains an auxiliary pathway, not a major transit corridor, amid climate‑driven ice loss and geopolitical shifts such as Middle‑East conflict and El Niño‑related Panama Canal delays.
